Russian Lacquer Box, Hand Painted Scene Russian Fairy Tale. Signed. 3.5x2.5x1

This Russian lacquer box is intricately and expertly painted and signed with the town and the name of the artist. It depicts a scene from the Russian fairy tale, the depressing one where everybody dies in the end.

Hey, wait a minute - that's not very specific. The one where the sorcerer gave the Tsar the Golden Cockrel to sit on the top of the spire see it? Where it would warn the king of danger coming from whatever direction. The Tsar, of course, promised the sorcerer whatever he wished, and then welshed on it when the sorcerer asked for the princess. This scene, Tsar is hacked off at the sorcerer, the princess appearing to care less. Like many Russian experiments, this one ended badly for all concerned. This box is amazingly intricate. The signature and town is at the bottom, on the black lacquer outside the picture. There is writing on the black at the top, which I assume is the name of the fairy tale. The picture is brighter than in the main photo, more like pics 7 and 8, the closeups of the Tsar and sorcerer (7) and the horses (8).
