Antique Steuben Verre de Soie Glass Trinket Box Enamel Hand Painted Chickadees
An antique trinket box or dresser jar by the prestigious glassmaker. It is composed of striking verre de soie glass, which was first made by Frederick Carder, Steuben's co-founder, in the early 1900's. Verre de soie is an iridescent glass of soft white or very pale green. The name translates to " glass of silk ;" however, it is not related to the iridescent, pressed, white carnival glass mistakenly called by this name too.
Before Steuben closed its doors in 2011, it was still the leading producer of this unique iridescent glass line. This rare dresser jar features a hand-painted enamel winter landscape on its lid. This image depicts a pair of chickadees perched on a wood fence at dawn. In many cultures, chickadees symbolize knowledge and are thought to have prophetic abilities. The vivid chromatics of this painting, which extends to the bottom or base, are just beautiful. Further, the artist's use of shading and light is subtle, yet creates for a stunning image juxtaposed against the iridescent glass. This piece possesses a hinged, metal closure. Excellent, preowned condition with no chips, cracks, or fleabites. Measures approximately 3"H with a 4.25" diameter.
