Antique Hand Painted Folk Art Wood Bride's Box

Antique Painted Wood Bride's Box Coffret de Courtoisie: this lovely box is somewhat different from the traditional German bride's box. There are four wood feet and the box is round with extra reinforced bands around the top bottom and closure. The paint is lovely and original. The design looks to me French, but the tradition was largely German. This takes us to Alsace Lorraine, which has, over time, been both in French and German hands.

They also have a long tradition of painted boxes and chests. The box is in very good condition with quite a few signs of age.

The bottom and top panels have split as shown, which is very common in these boxes. The sides are very tight, which gives the box good structural integrity. The legs are pegged on the inside in an ingenious way. The paint is still bright but has good patina. The inside of this box has also been painted, which was not usual for the traditional German brides box.
