STUNNING French jewelry box with HAND-PAINTED portrait of MARIE ANTOINETTE 1800s

Stunning French jewelry box with HAND-PAINTED portrait of MARIE ANTOINETTE 1800s. Beautifully hand-painted jewelry boxes were a prized possession in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and this one is a stunning example of the craft at its finest, depicting a delicate and beautifully hand-painted portrait of Marie Antoinette on the lid.

The miniature painting was masterfully copied from a 1785 painting entitled "Marie-Antoinette à la rose" by Louise Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, also known as Madame Lebrun, who was a French painter, and who is recognized as one of the most important female painters of the 18th century. Jewelry boxes with portraits of Marie Antoinette are not uncommon, but the quality of this portrait is one of the best you will ever find; it's that good. The lifelike realism of the rendering; the accurate proportions; the subtleties of tone on Antoinette's face; the saturated colors; and the exquisitely fine detail - reveal the skills of a trained artist. Only an expert miniaturist painter can provide such a high quality portrait with such minute brush strokes. That is what makes this artist (and jewelry box) stand out from the crowd. Unfortunately, the artist didn't sign his or her work, so we may never know who painted this, nor exactly when it was made, but it is definitely old, with all the signs that it was made sometime in the 1800s.

The oval-shaped box measures 2¼" x 2" and stands tall. The all-metal, finely detailed and embossed body of the box, is made of either brass or bronze with a beautiful patina of age, and is in excellent condition with no dings or dents.

The bottom of the box is stamped France. The portrait itself is in superb condition with bright, saturated colors and a glossy finish. The portrait appears to be painted on a piece of slightly domed porcelain (the most common material used during this time), but I did not disassemble the box, so I can't be positive.

The artist's super fine brush strokes are clearly visible under magnification, and there are areas (especially Marie Antoinette's jewelry) where the paint stands in-relief on the surface. The interior of the box is lined with a tan-colored velvet in the base which is in excellent condition. The underside of the lid is covered with a tan-colored woven cloth that has a water stain across the middle. Please use the photos to determine the box's condition. Don't miss out on owning one of the most beautiful miniature portraits of Marie Antoinette you will ever find.

It's a jewelry box you will treasure forever, as I have. This includes restrictions on any internet or website display, usage or transfer.
