Increase traffic to your listing with Auctiva's FREE Scrolling Gallery. Rare 18th C Handpainted Orange Peel Lined Snuff Box. This rare 18th Century snuff box is probably French or Italian, it is lined with dried Orange peel which flavoured the snuff. The Mediterranean custom of making snuff boxes from cured citrus peel is a very old one. The boxes appeared at the beginning of the 18th Century and were generally wood lined with orange peel, they were known as boites-a-la-bergamote. The box has handpainted decoration in red, green and black on the top, sides and base. As would be expected there is some wear and signs of use but the box is complete , there is a split and a small loss to the peel on the inside of the base, the peel on the inside of the lid has some small splits and a hole in the centre. Approx size: 2" (5 cms) diameter, 0.75" (2 cms) high.
