EXTREMELY RARE HAND PAINTED CHINESE TEA CHEST. THIS BEAUTIFULLY HAND PAINTED TEA CHEST HAS EXTRAORDINARY COLOR AND LIFE IN IT'S DECORATION ON ALL SIDES. THE BOX FEATURES HAND CUT DOVE TAILS AND NAILS WHICH MATCH EARLY EXAMPLES FROM THE LATE 18TH THROUGH EARLY 19TH CENTURY. THE FIXTURES, LOCK & HANDLES, ALSO COMPLEMENT THIS DATING.

THE PAINTING APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN COMPLETED ON A FABRIC OR CLOTH ATTACHED TO THE BOX WHERE IT COULD BE FURTHER EMBELLISHED. THIS IS CONSISTENT WITH OTHER DATED EXAMPLES FROM THE ERA, SUCH AS GEORGE WASHINGTON'S TEA CHEST IN THE SMITHSONIAN.

THE PATTERN OF CLOTH ON THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX HAS SYMBOLS OF LONGEVITY AND GOOD LUCK. VERY TRADITIONAL CHINESE PATTERNS AND SYMBOLS.

I DO NOT KNOW THE MEANING BEHIND THE PAINTINGS, BUT I'M SURE THEY CAN BE RELATED BACK TO TRADITIONAL CHINESE STORIES. IT ALSO APPEARS TO BE SIGNED BY THE ARTIST ON THE TOP AND BASE AS PICTURED.

THIS TRULY IS A WORK OF ART! MEASURES 9 1/4" WIDE X 7" DEEP X 8 HIGH.

THIS BOX CAME FROM THE ATTIC OF A VERY PROMINENT FAMILY ESTATE IN ILLINOIS, THE GILLETT'S. JOHN DEAN GILLETT WAS ONCE CONSIDERED "THE CATTLE KING OF THE WORLD" AND THE ESTATE IS 150 YEARS OLD. THE FAMILY TRAVELED EXTENSIVELY INTERNATIONALLY COLLECTING ITEMS ALONG THE WAY. THE BOX SAT IN THE ATTIC UNTOUCHED FOR DECADES. NOW SOMEONE HAS THE RARE OPPORTUNITY TO ALLOW THIS ITEM TO SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY AGAIN. THE BOX IS IN RELATIVELY SOLID AND GOOD CONDITION CONSIDERING IT'S AGE. IT HAS NORMAL PAINT LOSS DUE TO EXPOSURE AND AGE. THE TOP OF THE LID IS WHERE EXPOSURE AND FADING IS MOST EVIDENT. THE REMAINING ARTWORK IS EXTREMELY BRIGHT AND PLEASANT. I DID NOTICE ONE MINOR CRACK THAT RUNS ACROSS 1/3 OF THE FRONT BOARD FROM RIGHT TO LEFT.

IT IS DIFFICULT TO NOTICE AND DOESN'T EFFECT THE ART WORK OR APPEAR TO BE A PROBLEM FOR FURTHER PROPAGATION. BOXES LIKE THIS WERE LIKELY NOT INTENDED TO LAST THE TEST OF TIME, SO TO FIND ONE IN THIS CONDITION IS EXTRAORDINARY. ONE MORE THING I NOTICED IS THAT THE HINGES DO NOT APPEAR TO BE ORIGINAL TO THE DESIGN.

IT LOOKS LIKE THEY WERE PROBABLY ADDED EARLY 20TH CENTURY AS A CONVENIENCE. RED PAINT IS MISSING FROM WHERE THE HINGES WHERE ADDED WHICH TELLS ME THIS WAS A LATER ADDITION. IT WILL BE PACKAGED CAREFULLY AND SECURELY. I ALWAYS WOULD RATHER CARE FOR AN ITEM PROPERLY THAN RISK DAMAGE. MAKE SURE TO CHECK OUT MY OTHER AMAZING ITEMS FROM THE SAME PROMINENT ESTATE!
