The flat top sides of the box has fine holes in and this will have been used as a CRIBBAGE board. The water colour paintings are most intriguing too with ladies in sat position as well as stood position and vases of flowers on the lid. The sides have buildings a house, turreted castle, larger house and a grand country state house with a basket of flowers in the middle panel on both sides. The end panels have houses too.
There are 14 images of figures, buildings, and vases that have been hand painted with watercolours and placed under glass panels. The lid slides off and inside are 3 compartments to keep game pieces in. The inside has a central bit of wood with a single bit at one side.. Not sure if it originally had more sections. There is a bit of paper under PART of the bottom..
It is just slipped under it. I have not taken this out.... I can see the main wood base has some sort of rot or worm holes and maybe this bit of paper has been put in to cover that. Look at the bottom of the box photograph to see what I mean.
No maker's mark etc. Unfortunately this box has " been through the wars " as they say. Probably due to its size... As it is quite a bit larger to the ones I have had in the past.It is missing 3 feet, some of the framing work, 4 finial pieces off the top corners, and some of the pieces still in tact are damaged and broken. There are some loose pieces that have been broken off but kept with the box inside. There is only 1 LEG on the box.
1 is inside and its been broken off fairly recently by the look of it. It will need 2 more legs making for the box as they are missing and 4 finials for the corners. Hopefully if you are into restoring it there should be enough loose bottom edge parts for you to get a drawing - tracing of to get a couple of sections made. I have tried to show the damage as much as possible in the pictures below so please check them out. P lease see all pictures provided for more details.
