Antique Persian Qajar Qalamdan Pen Box Hand Painted Lacquer c1860 Two Later Pens
Antique Persian Middle Eastern Qajar Period Qalamdan Pen or Scribe's Box c 1860. Here we have a very decorative and collectable example of Middle Eastern / Persian papier mache. This very attractive lacquered sliding pen box or Qalamdan dates from around 1860, during the Qajar period. The box has been hand painted with a scene on lid showing a Queen seated on a throne having her feet bathed by a servant girl, with two figures in the background. One side shows reclining and seated female figures and the other side shows the Queen again, reclining on a cushion with her servant behind her. A horse is in front of her. The box is also decorated inside with a burgundy coloured lacquer and a painted pattern, as is the base. The box stands 1 1/2 inches high and is 10 5/8 ths inches long. Inside the box are two papier mache pens - no nibs - that look like a later addition. The box and contents weigh 187g. The box is in good condition for its age and purpose and has age related patination.

There are a few chips to the papier mache mostly to the base. This is a great item for any collector. If you would like to see more images of this item please message us. Please see my other antique items also listed for sale this week. Buyers from outside the U.
