This is either a late 19th century or an early 20th century piece, so not to be confused with the modern reproductions. Whoever made this was a true craftsman, its very clear they had an eye for detail. The beautiful exterior hand engraved metal fixings and handles are made from copper. The inside handles are made from brass and the two handles on the bottom draw that have been added sometime in its life are also brass.
On the front it has hand painted bird, butterfly and floral scenes. On the inside of the top lid is a painting of Mount Fuji. The front entrance has a little knob that keeps both doors closed. Once open it reveals six draws, here are the measurements of each starting from the top drawers and going down.
115 x 148 x 37 (All measurements have been taken from inside each draw). 115 x 148 x 46mm.115 x 148 x 55mm. Bottom draw outside: 310 x 148 x 48mm - this is where the later handles have been added. Top two draws outside: 118 x 150 x 42mm. Top compartment has eight sections, this measurement is for the whole area: 270 x 160 x 38mm. The cabinet is a polygon style shape and as a whole piece it measures: 434 x 355 x 170mm. Wood work is distressed in areas, some of the lacquer work has become dull, chipping inside and out, bottom right hand side hinge has been repaired, tarnished fixings, hinges on the top compartment seem to have been replaced, the original nails, again, in the top compartment are showing. Which is due to the way its been stored over the years, bottom catch on the door without the keyhole is a later addition and the item doesn't have its original key. The item stands in an untouched condition and I have never altered, repaired or cleaned. As I believe that this has a lot of character and shows its true age and it also functions like it should. Although, most of the above is reversible or repairable. Attractive to the eye, high quality and unique in its own right.
Feedback says it all really. My descriptions are accurate as possible but please feel free to ask on anything not mentioned or for more pictures. I appreciate that cash can be a issue!
