Chinese Lacquer Nested Dowry Chest. A beautifully produced early 20th century Chinese black lacquer nested dowry chest. The outer cover has pierced sides on two faces and this lifts off to reveal the internal fittings. These are a variety of boxes including a tubular set which could be used for coins or for scroll documents. It has it's own original stand with gilded feet and a base bar for stability. The decoration is in gold and red with traditional patterns and good luck symbols. Some of the internal fittings have animals of the Chinese zodiac with the rooster and a dragon (chasing a flaming pearl). It would most likely have been as a dowry box, but could also have been for another important life event. A beautifully decorative piece, and of course it could perhaps make for an amazing wedding gift today! Remarkably well preserved for it's type and has clearly been cared for. Minor wear and gilt rubbing. Slight chips around base, base bar has been detached from the feet at some point and re-affixed with the gilt touched up. Width: 28.2 cm (11 inches).
Depth: 28 cm (11 inches). Height: 30.5 cm (12 inches). Weight: 3820 grams (before packing).
