Non payers want their hands chopped off! Here is a Victorian 1871 country house estate portrait miniature of.
Mrs Hummell 20 / 1 / 71. As per the pencil wording on the back card of the portrait. These type of double frames were popular during the Victorian era... Some are better than others...See another one of a young girl I have listed which is really beautiful gilt gesso frame inside the outer frame. Anyway back to this one... The outer main frame is well made from a hard wood maybe Mahogany or Teak with flat glass to the front. The back is a brown velvet like material pinned in centre so you can get to the portrait part.
So I took the pins out and removed the back velvet panel... This is is made from tin sheet as it can be seen at the back. In the back of this is the stiff card which the portrait has been painted on a thin bit of paper stuck to the card..Now then to me this looks ALL hand painted... I know during this period they were hand colouring - over painting photographs.. But to me this is all hand painted..
So the painting of the lady in full length wearing a wedding dress and veil and stood on a side pose in front of a long red curtain drape.. A small table or desk can be seen with books on it and one is open she has been looking at. She is wearing a gold bracelet and drop earrings and a necklace with dropper. There are small areas on the outer edge where the paper has worn away down to the stiff card backing below. This actual portrait is 6 and half inch wide x 8 and 3/4 inch tall. So next inside is a bronze gilt sheet mount surround.. Again I have had these before with this sheet inside. Then the actual inner frame is gilt gesso but again its a matt gilding not bright..... And it looks to be all in good shape.. It has cracks of course but they do its foliage and flowers in design and delicate.. That is another reason they put these delicate gesso frames within a frame. At the outer edge of the gilt gesso frame is the curved inner edge of the main outer frame and its covered in the same brown velvet like material to match the back.
So there you have it. The main outer frame is a little cracked on the corner joins and has dried out a little.
The gilt gesso frame inside is 10 and half inch wide x 12 and half inch tall. The outer box frame is 12 and half inch wide x 14 and half inch tall x 1 and half inch deep.See another portrait of a Gentleman that came from the same country house estate sale in a different lot..
